The interviewer did not give any input. I had already answered the questions he had for me and there was some time remaining. So he just threw me a random question at the top of his head. I asked him for some input but he couldn't think of any. I think that is where the interview did not work out.

It's essential to demonstrate that you can really go deep... there are plenty of followup questions and (sometimes tangential) angles to explore.
