For #InternationalWomensDay, we’re celebrating the Quellaveco team, where women are leading the charge to re-imagine mining. Regarded as Peru’s most technically advanced mine, Quellaveco has transformed the way we mine, transport and process the copper-bearing ore, resulting in a safer workplace. The women at Quelleveco, recruited from the local community of Moquegua, are the ones leading these changes – with roles from entry-level to managerial positions. Today, women represent around 25% of the mine’s workforce – including almost 40% of leadership roles. Blasting Technical Assistant Melody Echegaray said: “Anglo American has opened our eyes to what we, as women, can achieve in the future. The company is giving us the opportunity and the tools to succeed in jobs we never thought would ever be open to us."
We have retained our place on the well-regarded Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI), recording an overall score of 82.83%, up from last year’s 81%. Liz Douglas, our Group Head of HR - Corporate Functions and Inclusion and Diversity commented: “We are very pleased to be included once again in this year’s Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index. Our increased overall score and strong performance in all five areas of measurement show that we continue to mature our approach to creating a fully inclusive workplace for everyone. Our female representation at Band 5 and above currently stands at 32%, on track to meet our target of 33% by the end of this year. We are proud to continue our ongoing efforts to build a workplace where everyone can fulfil their potential – regardless of their gender, race or religious background. We will continue to use the GEI as a tool in our quest for continuous improvement as an employer of choice.
