Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay, with this year’s theme focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Restoring land is crucial for protecting and reviving ecosystems globally, which is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. At #RHIMagnesita, we are committed to environmental recovery and protection in the areas where we operate. We are dedicated to restoring ecological balance, in compliance with environmental legislation and as part of our commitment to the responsible extraction of natural resources. In the region of Brumado in Brazil, we have implemented a Degraded Areas Recovery project (PRAD), which seeks to rehabilitate the soil and minimize erosion processes to allow the reintroduction of native species and the preservation of natural habitats. This initiative focuses on reforestation and rehabilitation of areas previously impacted by mining activities. In the mines that were temporarily closed, the areas identified for vegetation restoration had degraded characteristics, including compacted soil and low water availability. During 2023, we have undertaken a series of insightful actions including planting native seedlings to protect the soil from erosion and restore its ecological balance. A key aspect was the compensatory planting over a recovered area of 9 hectares, which included 18,776 seedlings of 35 species, adhering to environmental legislation. With the entry into force of the Critical Raw Materials Act, Europe's raw materials are recognized as an economic and geopolitical power. Our alpine magnesite from Breitenau lays the foundation for the processing of over 25% of the currently recognized critical raw materials in the EU. One thing is clear: without magnesite, there is no modern industry! We are proud that Director General Kerstin Jorna of DG GROW (European Commission) came to see our raw material deposits and future mining plans in Austria for herself. Last month, leaders from RHI Magnesita’s Digital Transformation Program Ticiana Kobel, EVP Legal & Digital Transformation, Alexander Schillinger, Global Head of Digital Transformation, Ajay Muralidhar, IT Application Delivery Expert, and Mauricio Vasconcelos, Head of Enterprise Architecture, visited the Tata Consultancy Services space in Hyderabad, India for the unveiling of a brand-new joint Development Factory – the ‘DevFactory’. TCS is supporting #RHIMagnesita as a key partner in introducing the company’s new streamlined process landscape based on SAP S/4 Hana, and the opening of the joint DevFactory marks an important step in RHI Magnesita’s digital transformation journey. This global, multi-year program will see a total streamlining of the refractory industry leader’s process landscape. The result will be a future-proof platform for continuous automation and rapid, cost-optimized expansion which fortifies this leadership position. The productive two-day visit included active discussions on specific milestones and critical success factors for the joint journey and further solidified the partnership between the two companies. The RHI Magnesita delegation was accompanied by Kevin Ortbach from Boston Consulting Group, who is supporting RHI Magnesita on the transformation strategy and value realization.
