      Entrevista

I originally applied to a different position in the many months (2-3) before I got a call back. I was contacted by HR about a position that they though I would be a strong match and wanted to setup a one-on-one phone interview. I replied back with a 4 possible date/times and got a confirmation within 24 hours. The first call was with my potential supervisor (I did not know that at the time, Amazon is very secretive and don't seem to like to show any of their cards). The call consisted of some background to the position and general STAR-based questions. I had plenty of time to ask my own as well. I was also asked a couple of math questions. Amazon seems to like to get questions, even if they normally respond with "I can't really go into that unless we hire you." Overall the call was very positive and I was informed I would be setup with a second phone interview shortly. About 2 days later I received another HR email to setup a second phone interview. Again, I supplied 4 date/times and one was confirmed within a day. The second call was similar to the first but, it was with a more senior employee. Questions were a bit more focused to the position and we started a hypothetical situation. The parameters of the hypothetical were very vague and required numerous follow-up questions and talking about various pros/cons (which is the point). Also had time for my own questions. After an hour I was told that HR would contact me again and based on the answers I would be flown out for an all-day interview. The next day I received a form letter from HR asking normal personnel questions (including salary expectations). After sending that off I got the notice they would like to fly me out. It took a bit of back-and-forth to find a suitable date, but no real issues. Amazon paid for the flight and hotel directly and reimbursed costs for ground transportation and meals. I was warned that a suit was not required and I would say that is good advise. The culture at Amazon is one of content over presentation. They want a sharp mind and not flashy threads. For men, pants and a nice non-white collared shirt is fine. I had clearly overdressed and it was a bit awkward. (This was my first interview with a 'casual' company) The day of the interviews it was a pleasant yet, stressful environment. You are taken to a meeting room and will have 4-6 hour-long interviews with peers and managers of the team. There are lots of overlapping STAR-based questions as well as numerous math questions and hypothetical questions. Is was common to go to the whiteboard in the room and map out your work/thoughts. Another difficult thing is that it was hard to tell if they actually wanted you to ask questions or not (something I am still unsure of). An hour can go very fast and I found quickly that the interviewer would look at his watch and say, "We have 2 minutes left, did you have any questions?" essentially only giving time for 1 or 2 key questions, even if you had more in mind. In other words, you have to be a little aggressive to get your points into the conversation. As other pointed out, there is a 'bar-raiser' interview (mine was at the end) and is was the toughest. You need to be able to prove you have the personality and competency to not only succeed at the position, but excel at it. At the end of the day, you speak with HR briefly and they send you on your way. It took a couple of days to get a call back. Unfortunately, I was not picked for the position. The frustrating part was that HR told me over the phone that the company had a 'no feedback' policy so I'll never know why. I've looked online since and the position is still open, which makes me think that some on the team just didn't think I was a good fit. Overall the process was very efficient and an exciting experiance. Amazon is a large company with very standardized processes in place. It should be noted the company and employees have a very high opinion of themselves and come off a bit too strong, but it is clearly the culture and everyone was still friendly to me. (Although I was warned that that 'Angry/Hostile' interview tactic is sometimes used by higher-tier managers during the interview process) I would of enjoyed working for Amazon, but my experiance going through their gauntlet helped me obtain a different job a few weeks later that was both a better fit and opportunity for me personally. The only thing that keeps me from saying this was a positive experiance was the 'no feedback' policy after the rejection.
