About Timberland Structural

Timberland Structural is a residential structural engineering firm serving homeowners, builders, architects, and contractors throughout Colorado. We design structural plans for remodels, additions, decks, garages, ADUs, custom homes, and field-related engineering letters.

We are looking for a reliable independent contractor engineer or structural designer to help with overflow design, calculations, redlines, and project support.

This is a flexible 1099 contractor role. The right person will help us move projects forward quickly and accurately while maintaining clear communication and high-quality engineering standards.

Role Overview

We are seeking a part-time independent contractor structural engineer or experienced structural designer to assist with residential structural engineering projects on an as-needed basis.

Typical work may include beam sizing, gravity framing design, deck framing, garage/addition framing, foundation sizing, lateral/shear wall review, engineering redlines, calculation packages, and field condition review.

This role is ideal for someone who has residential structural engineering experience and wants flexible contract work without a full-time commitment.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

• Review architectural plans, field photos, sketches, and project notes
• Perform structural calculations for residential framing and foundation conditions
• Size beams, headers, posts, footings, deck framing, floor joists, and roof framing members
• Prepare clear engineering redlines for drafting staff
• Review and mark up structural plan sets
• Assist with structural letters and responses to field conditions
• Provide calculation packages when required
• Coordinate with the principal engineer on design approach and assumptions
• Communicate clearly when information is missing or a scope item is unclear
• Complete assigned tasks within agreed timelines and budgets

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field
• PE license preferred but not required for all tasks
• Colorado PE license is a strong plus
• Experience with residential wood-framed construction
• Familiarity with IRC/IBC residential structural design
• Experience with gravity framing, foundations, and basic lateral design
• Ability to produce clear calculations and redlines
• Strong written communication skills
• Reliable turnaround and responsiveness
• Comfortable working independently as a 1099 contractor

Software / Tools

Experience with any of the following is helpful:

• Bluebeam Revu
• ClearCalcs, Calcs.com, Enercalc, Forte, WoodWorks, or similar
• PDF markup tools
• Microsoft OneDrive / SharePoint
• ClickUp or other project management tools
• Chief Architect experience is a plus but not required

Contractor Relationship

This is a 1099 independent contractor position. You will control your own schedule and method of work, subject to project deadlines and agreed deliverables. Work will be assigned on a project-by-project or task-by-task basis.

This is not a full-time employee position. Hours will vary depending on workload and availability.

Compensation

Pay is typically:

• $60/hr for non-stamped engineering support
• $80/hr for stamped work, if applicable and agreed in advance

Project-based pricing may also be considered for the right candidate.
